A Hand Crafted Car Primer
It all begins with pencil and
paper. The master designer puts down his or her concept into a line drawing,
which becomes the basis for the vehicles shape. The next processes take many
long hours of creating the "plug".
Using materials such as foam, cardboard, wood, clay,
fiberglass and Bondo (tm), the vehicle body takes shape on
a rolling chassis which is taken from a donor vehicle upon which the new design
will fit.
Once the basic shape is close to the original line drawings,
final 'blocking' is done to get rid of any high or low spots, once again using
Bondo (tm) to put the finishing touches on before spraying
the body with grey sanding primer.
The body is then sanded and sprayed with guide coat to detect
any other scratches or pin holes. Red Glazing putty is then used to fill in
these areas and the 'plug' is shot again with grey sanding primer.
The entire body is then sanded lightly using a fine grit
sandpaper.
The next process is making
the molds from the plug. Three coats of mold release wax is applied to the
entire body. After buffing off the wax, several coats of PVA [a liquid like
saran wrap (tm) ] is applied over the body. Black gel coat
is then applied to the body parts. Three layers of fiberglass is then applied
over the gel coat to create the mold.
Once the mold is cured it is removed from the body parts on
the plug. The plug is then destroyed.
Body parts are created using fiberglass which is either hand laid or sprayed into the molds. The new parts are placed onto the donor chassis and drive train and the body is painted and any customization is done to get the vehicle prepared for car shows.
As you can imagine, this entire process takes many hours and
materials to end up with a unique vehicle unlike any other on the market.
